  • Complete Bathroom Renovation in Oldham | Before & After

Another bathroom completely transformed by Mike and Harry at MGA Plumbing & Heating — this time right here in Oldham. The existing bathroom was dated and ready for a complete overhaul, so the team carried out a full renovation to create a brighter, cleaner and much more contemporary space. The project included a new bath and shower, large-format wall tiling, new flooring and a new towel radiator, with modern black fittings bringing the finished room together. Take a look at the transformation from before, through the renovation, to the finished bathroom. The Bathroom Before the Renovation Stripping It Back and Starting Again With the old bathroom stripped out, Mike and Harry could begin rebuilding the room from the ground up. The renovation involved installing the new bath and shower, completing the wall tiling and flooring, fitting the new towel radiator and bringing all the different elements of the bathroom together. Taking the room back and starting again also meant the finish could be considered as a whole, rather than simply replacing individual fixtures in an outdated bathroom. The Finished Bathroom The finished bathroom is almost unrecognisable from the room Mike and Harry started with. Large-format grey wall tiles give the room a clean, contemporary finish, while the black shower frame and fittings add contrast against the white bathroom suite. New flooring and the towel radiator complete the transformation. The result is a modern, practical bathroom that makes much better use of the space — and gives the customer a completely different room without changing the bathroom's overall footprint. • MGA Plumbing & Heating Backs Apex Taekwondo Oldham’s Fight for a New Home

When a local club that's spent years supporting young people and families suddenly finds itself without a permanent home, the local community matters more than ever. That's why MGA Plumbing & Heating is proud to be backing Apex Taekwondo Greater Manchester as the club works to transform its newly secured premises in Oldham into a permanent home for its members. And for Mike, this is about more than putting the MGA logo on a sponsorship board. As well as sponsoring the club, he'll also be getting the tools out and helping with the renovation by carrying out the plumbing work for the new toilet facilities. Apex Taekwondo Oldham: A Club Without a Home Apex Taekwondo Greater Manchester has built a strong community around the club, providing a place for children, young people and adults to train, develop their skills and build confidence. After losing their previous training facilities, the club suddenly found itself facing an uncertain future. But rather than letting that stop them, the Apex team, its members and their families have kept pushing forward. Apex have now secured new premises in Oldham — but there's a big job ahead before they can turn it into the permanent home the club and its members deserve. Renovation work has yet to begin, and the club is now fundraising to help transform the empty premises into a fully functioning Taekwondo facility. A New Home — and a New Challenge The good news is that Apex Taekwondo Greater Manchester has now secured new premises in Oldham — giving the club the opportunity to create a permanent home for its members. But securing the building is only the beginning. Renovation work has yet to start, and there's plenty to do before the new facility is ready to welcome members through the doors. The space needs to be transformed into a safe, practical and welcoming environment where the Apex community can train and continue to grow. That's where the next challenge begins. Apex is now fundraising to help make the transformation possible, with support from its members, families, local businesses and the wider community. More Than Just a Logo on a Board For MGA Plumbing & Heating, supporting Apex is about more than simply putting our logo on a sponsorship board. When Mike heard about the plans for the new premises and the work needed to get the facility ready, there was an obvious way he could do a little more to help. As part of the renovation, Mike will be getting the tools out and carrying out the plumbing work for the new toilet facilities — helping Apex take another important step towards opening the doors to its new home. The work hasn't started yet, but once it does we'll be following the project and sharing the progress along the way. For Mike, it's a chance to use what he does every day to give something back to a local club that's doing a lot for children, young people, adults and families across the community. So yes, you'll see the MGA logo on the sponsorship board — but you'll probably see Mike with a spanner in his hand first. 🔧🥋 Supporting the Community We Work In MGA Plumbing & Heating has always been a local business. Mike lives and works in the area, and many of the customers who support MGA are from the same communities that clubs like Apex serve. That's why getting involved with Apex felt like a natural fit. Local sports clubs can play a huge part in their communities, giving children and young people somewhere to train, make friends, build confidence and learn skills that go far beyond sport. For Mike, supporting Apex isn't about getting something back. It's about being able to use the business — and his trade — to help a local club at a time when that support can make a genuine difference. And hopefully, when the work is finished and Apex finally opens the doors to its new permanent home, MGA will have played a small part in helping make it happen. Help Apex Build Their New Home Apex now has the space it needs to grow — but there's still a big job ahead before the doors can open. The club is fundraising to transform the new premises in Werneth into a safe, welcoming and fully functioning Taekwondo facility for its members. The work needed includes new flooring and mats, changing facilities, toilets, safety improvements, decorating and essential training equipment. Apex has more than 60 members, from complete beginners through to athletes competing at national and international level, and the new facility will give the club the space it needs to continue growing and supporting more people in the local community. The fundraising target is £25,000, and every contribution — big or small — can help take Apex another step closer to getting its members back on the mats. If you can't donate, simply sharing the campaign can help too. Follow the Journey This is only the beginning of the story. As Apex begins transforming its new premises in Werneth, we'll be following the project and sharing updates as the new facility starts to take shape — including Mike getting stuck into the plumbing work for the new toilet facilities. You can also follow Apex Taekwondo Greater Manchester directly to keep up with the club, its members, fundraising and progress on their new home. We're looking forward to seeing the transformation from an empty premises to a thriving new home for Apex — and eventually seeing their members back on the mats. Good luck, Team Apex. • Bathroom Flooring Upgrade in Mossley: Bath Removal, Floor Preparation & Refit

BEFORE THE BATHROOM FLOORING UPGRADE The original freestanding bath was removed to give Mike access to the existing bathroom floor. Once the bath was out, the condition of the timber floor underneath could be properly assessed and prepared ready for the next stage of the work. DURING THE BATHROOM FLOORING UPGRADE With the bath removed, Mike prepared the existing floor before installing new boarding to create a suitable, even base for the new bathroom flooring. Taking the time to prepare the floor properly is an important part of the job. Once the boarding was fitted and the area was ready, the new vinyl flooring could be laid to give the bathroom a fresh, clean finish. THE FINISHED MOSSLEY BATHROOM With the new vinyl flooring laid, Mike carefully refitted the original freestanding bath, completing the flooring upgrade and leaving the bathroom with a fresh, clean finish. The existing black bath tap and radiator remained in place, with MGA Plumbing & Heating’s work focused on the bath removal, floor preparation, new flooring and refitting the original bath. WHY FLOOR PREPARATION MATTERS IN A BATHROOM A good bathroom floor starts with what’s underneath it. Before new flooring is laid, the existing floor needs to be properly prepared so there is a suitable, even base for the finished surface. On this Mossley project, Mike boarded the existing timber floor before the new vinyl flooring was installed. This preparation helped create a neat foundation for the new floor and a much cleaner overall finish. BATHROOM UPGRADES IN MOSSLEY & OLDHAM Not every bathroom project needs to be a complete refit. So, we’re putting the plumbing tools down for a few minutes and sharing 10 great things to do in and around Oldham. Grab your coat — this is Oldham, after all — and let’s get exploring! 1. EXPLORE DOVESTONE RESERVOIR If you’re searching for places to visit near Oldham, Dovestone Reservoir has to be high on the list. Set on the edge of the Peak District near Greenfield, Dovestone is a popular spot for walking and enjoying some impressive countryside views. Whether you’re heading out for a proper walk or simply fancy some fresh air and scenery, it’s a brilliant place to escape for a few hours. Great for: Walking, countryside views and getting outdoors. Mike’s tip: Check the weather before you set off — this is Greater Manchester, so sunshine and rain can sometimes turn up on the same walk! 2. SPEND AN AFTERNOON IN UPPERMILL & SADDLEWORTH If you fancy a relaxed afternoon out, Uppermill in Saddleworth is well worth a visit. With its village atmosphere, independent shops, cafés and surrounding countryside, Uppermill is a great place for a wander. You can also explore stretches of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal or use the village as a starting point for discovering more of Saddleworth. It’s one of those places where you can go for a quick coffee and somehow end up spending half the day there. Great for: Coffee, food, shopping, canal walks and exploring Saddleworth. Mike’s tip: Leave yourself enough time for a proper wander — and possibly a brew while you’re there. 3. TAKE A WALK AROUND TANDLE HILL COUNTRY PARK For woodland walks and open views, Tandle Hill Country Park is another great outdoor spot in the Oldham area. The park combines woodland and open grassland, with walking routes and views across the surrounding countryside and Greater Manchester. Whether you want to stretch your legs, walk the dog or simply get away from screens for an hour or two, Tandle Hill is well worth adding to your list. Great for: Walking, woodland, views and fresh air. Mike’s tip: Wear decent footwear if the weather has been typically Oldham! 4. ENJOY A FAMILY DAY AT DAISY NOOK COUNTRY PARK If you’re looking for family things to do around Oldham, Daisy Nook Country Park deserves a place on the list. With woodland, waterways, walking routes, picnic areas and space for the kids to explore, it’s a good option when you want an inexpensive day outdoors. Pack some snacks, get everyone away from the screens and enjoy a wander through one of the area’s best-known green spaces. Great for: Families, walking, picnics and nature. Mike’s tip: Take a change of shoes for the kids. You’ll thank us when you get back to the car! 5. DISCOVER LOCAL HISTORY & CULTURE AT GALLERY OLDHAM Not every great day out needs walking boots. Great for: Art, exhibitions, local history and rainy days. Mike’s tip: A good choice when you want to explore Oldham without needing a waterproof jacket! 6. WALK ALONG THE HUDDERSFIELD NARROW CANAL The Huddersfield Narrow Canal through Saddleworth offers another brilliant way to see a different side of the area. The canal passes through picturesque villages and countryside, with routes around places including Uppermill and Diggle. It’s a great option if you fancy a peaceful waterside walk while taking in some of the area's industrial heritage and Pennine scenery. Great for: Canal walks, photography, local history and exploring Saddleworth. Mike’s tip: Combine it with a stop in Uppermill and you’ve got yourself a cracking afternoon out. 7. RELAX IN ALEXANDRA PARK You don’t have to head into the hills to find green space in Oldham. Alexandra Park is close to Oldham town centre and offers paths, landscaped green space and a boating lake, making it a handy choice for a relaxed walk or some time outdoors. It’s particularly useful if you want somewhere accessible from the town centre without planning a full countryside trip. Great for: Relaxed walks, families, green space and a quieter afternoon. Mike’s tip: Perfect when you fancy getting outdoors but don’t want to turn it into a full hiking expedition. 8. TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT AT SUMMIT UP When the weather isn’t playing nicely — or you just fancy something more energetic — Summit Up in Oldham offers indoor climbing activities for different ages and abilities. It gives families and groups an indoor option and adds something a little more adventurous to our list. If walking around a reservoir sounds too peaceful for you, climbing a wall might be more your style! Great for: Families, indoor activities, climbing and rainy days. Mike’s tip: Maybe save the big Sunday dinner until after the climbing. 9. EXPLORE CROMPTON MOOR For another taste of Oldham’s countryside, head towards Crompton Moor above Shaw. The area offers moorland, woodland and routes for walking and cycling, giving you another option when you want to escape into the outdoors without travelling far from Oldham. It also shows just how much countryside there is across the borough beyond the better-known Saddleworth spots. Great for: Walking, cycling, countryside and views. Mike’s tip: If you live around Shaw or Crompton, you’ve got some brilliant countryside practically on your doorstep. 10. SPEND SOME TIME EXPLORING OLDHAM TOWN CENTRE Sometimes the best way to appreciate somewhere is simply to spend a few hours exploring it. Oldham town centre offers shopping, places to eat and drink, entertainment and cultural attractions, with the Metrolink making it easy to reach from different parts of Greater Manchester. Combine the town centre with Gallery Oldham or Alexandra Park and you can easily build your own Oldham day out. Great for: Shopping, food, entertainment and combining several activities in one day. Mike’s tip: Don’t rush straight through town — have a wander and support a few local businesses while you’re there.

  • How Much Does a Plumber Cost in Oldham? A Simple Guide to Plumbing Costs

If you’re wondering how much a plumber costs in Oldham, the answer usually depends on the type of job, how long it takes and whether any parts are needed. A dripping tap or toilet repair will normally be a very different job from replacing pipework, fitting radiators or carrying out a larger plumbing installation. At MGA Plumbing & Heating, Mike believes in keeping things straightforward. He’ll discuss the job with you, explain what’s involved and provide clear advice without unnecessary jargon or pressure. In this guide, we’ll look at some of the main things that can affect plumbing costs and what to consider when getting a quote from a plumber in Oldham. WHAT AFFECTS THE COST OF A PLUMBER IN OLDHAM? There isn’t one fixed price for every plumbing job. The cost of hiring a plumber in Oldham can vary depending on several factors. TYPE OF PLUMBING JOB A straightforward repair, such as fixing a dripping tap, may require much less time and fewer materials than replacing pipework, installing a radiator or completing plumbing work as part of a bathroom refit. TIME NEEDED TO COMPLETE THE WORK Some problems can be diagnosed and repaired relatively quickly, while others require investigation before the cause becomes clear. PARTS AND MATERIALS Replacement taps, valves, pipework, fittings and other materials can all affect the overall cost of the job. ACCESS TO THE PROBLEM A visible leaking pipe may be relatively straightforward to reach. Plumbing hidden behind walls, beneath floors or in difficult-to-access areas can require additional work. THE ACTUAL CONDITION OF THE SYSTEM Sometimes what appears to be a small plumbing problem can reveal another issue once the work begins. A good plumber should explain what they’ve found and discuss any additional work with you. IS IT CHEAPER TO FIX A PLUMBING PROBLEM EARLY? In many cases, dealing with a plumbing problem early can help prevent a relatively small issue from becoming a much bigger job. A dripping tap, small leak, running toilet or unusual drop in water pressure might not seem urgent at first, but leaving a problem unresolved can sometimes lead to water damage or additional repairs. If you spot a plumbing problem in your Oldham home, it’s worth getting it checked rather than simply hoping it goes away. Mike at MGA Plumbing & Heating can assess the problem, explain what’s causing it and talk you through the appropriate repair. Catching problems early can also give you more time to arrange the work rather than dealing with an unexpected plumbing headache later. HOW CAN I GET AN ACCURATE PLUMBING QUOTE IN OLDHAM? The best way to get an accurate plumbing quote is to provide as much information about the job as possible. When contacting Mike, it helps to explain what the problem is, where it is in your home, when you first noticed it and whether anything has changed recently. Photos can also be useful for showing visible leaks, damaged fittings or the area where work is required. For larger jobs, Mike may need to take a closer look before confirming what work is needed. At MGA Plumbing & Heating, the aim is simple: straightforward advice and a clear explanation of the work required, so you understand what you’re being quoted for. Looking for a plumber in Oldham or the surrounding area?Get in touch with Mike and tell him what you need help with. PLUMBING COSTS IN OLDHAM — FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS How much does a plumber cost in Oldham? There isn’t one fixed price for plumbing work in Oldham. The cost depends on the type of job, the time required, access to the problem and any parts or materials needed. For an accurate quote, it’s best to describe the job directly to the plumber. Do plumbers charge different prices for different jobs? Yes. Fixing a dripping tap or faulty toilet can involve very different work from replacing pipework, fitting a radiator or carrying out plumbing for a bathroom refit. Can I send photos when asking for a plumbing quote? Yes. Photos can be helpful when explaining a visible plumbing problem and may give Mike a better idea of what is involved before arranging the next step. Who can I contact for plumbing repairs in Oldham? MGA Plumbing & Heating provides plumbing and heating services in Oldham and surrounding areas. You can contact Mike to discuss the problem and the work that may be required. Does MGA Plumbing & Heating only do small plumbing repairs? No. MGA Plumbing & Heating can help with a range of plumbing and heating work, from everyday repairs and pipework to radiators and bathroom refits. NEED A PLUMBER IN OLDHAM? Mike will talk you through what’s needed, explain the work clearly and help you understand the next step. Need a plumbing quote? Give Mike a shout and tell him what you need help with.

  • Boiler & Heating Maintenance in Oldham: 7 Tips to Keep Your Home Warm

When the temperature drops in Oldham, the last thing you want is a boiler or heating system that decides to pack in. Regular maintenance can help keep your home warm, improve efficiency and spot potential problems before they turn into expensive repairs. Mike’s tip: Don’t wait until the first freezing morning to find out something isn’t right. Mike at MGA Plumbing & Heating provides friendly, local boiler and heating help across Oldham and the surrounding areas. Close-up view of Mike inspecting a heating system Why Regular Heating Maintenance Matters Regular heating maintenance helps keep your home warm, your system running efficiently and potential problems under control. For homeowners in Oldham, having your heating checked before you really need it can make all the difference. Better efficiency: A well-maintained heating system can work more efficiently instead of using extra energy to keep your home warm. Safer heating: Regular checks can help identify problems that could affect the safe operation of your boiler or heating system. Fewer nasty surprises: Spotting worn parts or developing faults early can help prevent a small problem becoming a much bigger repair. Mike’s tip: Don’t wait for your heating to stop working before giving it some attention. Regular maintenance can help spot problems early — especially before the colder months arrive. Benefits of Regular Heating Maintenance Keeping on top of your heating system can make your home more comfortable, help it run efficiently and reduce the chance of unexpected problems. Here are some of the biggest benefits of regular heating maintenance Improved Energy Efficiency A well-maintained heating system should not have to work harder than necessary to keep your home comfortable. Regular checks can help identify issues that may be affecting performance, helping your heating operate more efficiently and potentially keeping energy use under better control. Longer System Lifespan Looking after your boiler and heating system can help reduce unnecessary wear and tear. Regular maintenance gives developing problems a chance to be spotted earlier, which may help your system stay reliable for longer and reduce the likelihood of premature replacement. Enhanced Comfort A well-maintained heating system can provide more consistent warmth throughout your home, helping reduce cold spots and keeping rooms comfortable when the temperature drops. Peace of Mind Knowing your boiler and heating system have been properly checked gives you extra peace of mind, particularly as the colder months approach. And if Mike spots something that needs attention, you can deal with it before it has the chance to become a bigger problem. How to Keep Your Heating System Running Smoothly A few simple checks can help keep your heating working as it should, while some jobs should always be left to a qualified professional. Here’s what homeowners can keep an eye on between professional heating checks: Check Your Radiators Regularly Radiators can give you some useful clues about how your heating system is performing. If they aren’t heating properly, take longer than usual to warm up or have cold areas, your system may need some attention. Cold at the top: The radiator may need bleeding to release trapped air. Cold at the bottom: This can sometimes indicate a build-up of sludge within the system. One radiator staying cold: Check the radiator valves are open. If the problem continues, it may need a closer look. Mike’s tip: If you’re regularly bleeding radiators or they keep developing cold spots, give Mike a shout — there could be an underlying issue worth checking. Keep an Eye on Your Boiler Pressure Your boiler pressure can affect how well your central heating works. If the pressure regularly drops too low or rises unusually high, it could indicate a problem that needs investigating. Check the pressure gauge when the system is cold and follow the guidance for your particular boiler. Mike’s tip: If your boiler keeps losing pressure after you’ve topped it up, don’t keep ignoring it. Give Mike a shout — there may be a leak or another issue that needs checking. Book a Professional Boiler Service Regular boiler servicing is one of the best ways to keep your heating system safe, efficient and reliable. A qualified Gas Safe registered engineer can check the boiler, identify developing faults and make sure it is operating safely. Mike is Gas Safe registered (Registration No. 971320) and provides boiler servicing and heating support across Oldham and the surrounding areas. Mike’s tip: An annual boiler service is much easier to plan than an unexpected breakdown in the middle of winter. If your service is due, give Mike a shout. Test the Thermostat Your thermostat tells your heating when to switch on and off, so it’s worth checking that it’s responding properly. If rooms aren’t reaching the temperature you’ve set, the heating comes on at unexpected times or the thermostat seems unresponsive, there could be an issue worth investigating. Mike’s tip: Before assuming there’s a problem with the boiler, check the thermostat settings and batteries if your model uses them. Sometimes the simplest things are worth checking first. Listen for Unusual Boiler & Heating Noises Your heating system shouldn’t suddenly start making unfamiliar banging, gurgling, whistling or knocking noises. Sometimes the cause can be relatively simple, but persistent or unusual sounds can also indicate a problem that needs professional attention. Mike’s tip: If your boiler or heating suddenly sounds different, don’t start removing covers or trying to repair internal components yourself. Give Mike a shout and get it checked safely. Simple Heating Checks You Can Do at Home There are a few simple things you can safely check yourself between professional boiler services. You don’t need to start taking anything apart — just keep an eye out for anything that doesn’t seem right. Check your radiators: Look out for cold spots, unusual noises or radiators that are taking longer than normal to warm up. Check your boiler pressure: Keep an eye on the pressure gauge and take notice if the pressure repeatedly drops or rises unexpectedly. Check your thermostat: Make sure it’s responding properly and that your heating is coming on when you expect it to. Mike’s tip: Never remove the boiler casing or attempt work on gas components yourself. Gas work should always be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. The Cost of Neglecting Maintenance Skipping regular heating maintenance can sometimes allow small problems to develop into more expensive ones. A boiler or heating system that isn’t working properly may also use more energy or become less reliable when you need it most. Unexpected repair bills: A developing fault can become a more complicated and costly repair if it’s left unattended. Higher energy use: A heating system that isn’t operating efficiently may need to work harder to keep your home warm. Earlier replacement: Looking after your boiler and heating system can help reduce unnecessary wear and may help extend its useful life. Mike’s tip: If something about your heating doesn’t seem right, getting it checked sooner rather than later can often save a lot of hassle. Keep Your Oldham Home Warm & Your Heating Running Smoothly Regular heating maintenance can help keep your home comfortable, your system working efficiently and unexpected problems to a minimum. From checking your radiators and thermostat to arranging regular boiler servicing, a little attention can make a big difference — particularly before the colder weather arrives. You don’t need to be a plumber — but knowing where your water comes in, where it drains away and where your main stop tap is can be extremely useful. Water supply: Brings fresh mains water to your taps, toilets and appliances. Waste & drainage: Carries used water away from sinks, baths, showers, toilets and appliances. Taps, toilets & fittings: These are often where the first signs of a plumbing problem appear. Your stop tap: Make sure you know where it is and that you can access it. Being able to turn the water off quickly can make a big difference if a pipe suddenly leaks. Mike’s tip: Don’t wait for water to be pouring through the ceiling to start looking for your stop tap! Find it now and make sure everyone in the house knows where it is. Simple Plumbing Maintenance That Can Prevent Problems A little regular attention can help you spot plumbing issues before they become bigger problems. You don’t need specialist tools — just get into the habit of checking the areas of your home where leaks and wear are most likely to show up. Check Regularly for Small Leaks Small leaks are easy to ignore, but even a slow drip can cause damage if it goes unnoticed. Every so often, have a quick look under sinks, around toilets, near appliances and anywhere you have visible pipework. Water marks or staining: Check walls, ceilings and inside cupboards for unexplained damp patches or discolouration. Damp or musty smells: These can sometimes be an early sign of a hidden leak. Dripping taps or pipe joints: Even a small persistent drip is worth dealing with. Unexpected changes to your water bill: If your usage hasn’t changed but your bill has, it may be worth checking for a leak. Mike’s tip: If you find a leak and you’re not sure where it’s coming from, give Mike a shout. Catching it early can help prevent further damage. Look After Your Drains Blocked sinks and slow-running drains are often easier to prevent than deal with later. A few simple habits can help keep things flowing properly. Keep fats and oils out of the sink: Let cooking fat cool and dispose of it rather than pouring it down the drain. Catch food and hair: Sink strainers and shower drain covers can help stop debris entering your pipework. Watch for slow drainage: If water starts taking noticeably longer to drain away, deal with it before it becomes a complete blockage. Mike’s tip: Avoid relying on harsh chemical drain cleaners, particularly if you don’t know what’s causing the blockage. If a drain keeps blocking or smells unusual, give Mike a shout. Know When It’s Time to Call Mike Some plumbing jobs are simple to keep an eye on yourself, but others are better dealt with by an experienced plumber. Give Mike a shout if you notice: A leak that won’t stop: Especially if you can’t identify where the water is coming from. Repeatedly blocked drains: Frequent blockages can point to a problem further along the pipework. Low or suddenly changing water pressure: Particularly if it affects several taps around the house. Unusual noises from your pipes: Banging, knocking or other new sounds are worth investigating. Water damage or unexplained damp: Don’t leave it until the damage gets worse. Need help? Be Mindful of Seasonal Changes Oldham’s colder weather can be particularly tough on exposed pipework, so a few seasonal checks are worth doing before temperatures really drop. Protect exposed pipes: Pipework in garages, lofts and other colder areas may benefit from suitable insulation to help protect it during freezing weather. Know where your stop tap is: If a pipe does freeze or burst, being able to shut off the water quickly is important. Keep an eye on outside taps: Check outdoor pipework and taps for leaks or damage, particularly before and after freezing weather. Don’t ignore a frozen pipe: Avoid using a naked flame or other unsafe methods to thaw it. If you’re unsure what to do, call a professional. Mike’s tip: A quick check of exposed pipework before winter can save a lot of hassle when the first proper cold snap arrives. Look After Your Taps, Toilets & Fittings Taps, toilets and everyday plumbing fittings get plenty of use, so it’s worth keeping an eye on them. Small changes can often be the first sign that something needs attention. Dripping taps: Don’t leave a persistent drip indefinitely — worn components may need replacing. Running toilets: If water continues running after flushing, it can waste water and may indicate a problem inside the cistern. Loose taps or fittings: Movement around a tap or fitting can sometimes lead to leaks if left unresolved. Signs of corrosion: Keep an eye out for rust, staining or deterioration around visible pipework and connections. Mike’s tip: If a tap, toilet or fitting has started behaving differently, dealing with it early is usually easier than waiting for it to fail completely. Keep Your Plumbing in Good Shape A little regular plumbing maintenance can go a long way. Knowing where your stop tap is, watching for small leaks, looking after your drains and keeping an eye on taps, toilets and pipework can help you catch problems before they become bigger headaches. • 7 Common Plumbing Problems in Oldham Homes & How to Prevent Them

From dripping taps and blocked drains to low water pressure and leaking pipes, plumbing problems can quickly become a headache. The good news is that spotting the warning signs early can often prevent a small issue becoming a much bigger repair. Mike from MGA Plumbing & Heating looks after homes across Oldham and the surrounding areas, so here are seven common plumbing problems worth watching out for — and what you can do to help prevent them. Close-up view of a leaking faucet with water droplets 1. Dripping Taps That constant drip isn’t just annoying — it can waste water and may be a sign that a washer, seal or another part of the tap needs attention. If a tap keeps dripping after it’s fully turned off, it’s worth getting it checked before the problem gets worse. Mike’s tip: Don’t ignore a dripping tap for weeks. A simple repair now could save water and prevent further wear to the fitting. 2. Blocked Drains A slow-draining sink, shower or bath is often the first warning sign of a blockage. Hair, soap, grease and food waste can gradually build up inside pipework, eventually leaving you with water that won’t drain properly — or worse, starts coming back up. Mike’s tip: Avoid pouring fats, oils or grease down the kitchen sink, and use drain covers to catch hair and debris. If a blockage keeps returning, there may be a problem further along the pipework that needs investigating. 3. Running Toilets A toilet that keeps running after you’ve flushed it can waste a surprising amount of water. It’s often caused by a problem with one of the components inside the cistern, such as the inlet or flush valve, and it’s usually worth sorting sooner rather than later. Mike’s tip: If you can constantly hear water running into the toilet bowl or the cistern keeps refilling when nobody has used it, don’t ignore it. A relatively small repair could stop unnecessary water waste and prevent the problem getting worse. 4. Low Water Pressure Low water pressure can make everyday jobs like showering, filling the sink or running a tap frustratingly slow. The cause could be something simple, but it can also point to an issue with your pipework, a valve or the water supply. Mike’s tip: If the pressure has suddenly dropped or only affects certain taps, it’s worth getting it checked rather than guessing at the cause. Mike can help identify whether the problem is inside your home or needs to be raised with your water supplier. 5. Leaking Pipes Leaking pipes can start with something as small as a drip, but left untreated they can cause damp, damage to walls or floors and unnecessary water waste. Look out for wet patches, staining, musty smells or an unexplained drop in water pressure. Mike’s tip: If you spot a leak, turn off the water supply if it’s safe to do so and give Mike a call. Getting to a leaking pipe quickly can help limit the damage and make the repair much easier. 6. Frozen & Burst Pipes Cold weather can put extra pressure on your plumbing. Water inside exposed or poorly insulated pipes can freeze, expand and potentially cause a pipe to split or burst — leaving you with a serious leak when it thaws. Mike’s tip: Before temperatures drop, check that exposed pipework is properly insulated and make sure you know where your main stop tap is. If you suspect a pipe has frozen, don’t try to thaw it with a naked flame — give Mike a call if you’re unsure what to do. 7. When to Call Mike Some small plumbing jobs are straightforward, but if you’re dealing with a persistent leak, recurring blockage, loss of water pressure or anything you’re simply not sure about, it’s usually better to get it checked before a small problem becomes a bigger one. Mike’s tip: If in doubt, give Mike a shout.
